About the 39 Tribal Nations

Within the landscape of the State of Oklahoma are located thirty-nine tribal nations, thirty-eight are federally recognized and the Yuchi community remain citizens of the Muscogee Nation. Four tribes have ancestral ties to this landscape--the Apache, Caddo, Wichita, and Tonkawa. During the 19th century, a series of U.S. federal policies forcibly relocated sixty-seven tribes here. Since, the tribes are now established as strong political and economic bodies. They foster social ties with one another while preserving their unique cultures, languages, and identities.
