Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Tlingit artist Preston Singletary has studied and worked with a variety of glass artists, such as Benjamin Moore, Dante Marioni, and Dale Chihuly. Singletary’s mastery of European glass blowing converses with his Northwestern heritage as a way to challenge the idea of the material perimeters in Indigenous art.
Singletary draws from his Tlingit cultural heritage, pulling mostly traditional stories and visual motifs, in his works as a means of exploring storytelling through different mediums. His glass sculptures feature human and animal figures and Tlingit themes of transformation. Singletary often collaborates with other established artists, such as fellow Northwesterner, Joe Fedderson, and FAM Store Featured Artist, Marcus Amerman. His works have been featured and can be found in museums and galleries across the world.
